2011 Best Comics

To make a list of my favorite comics of the year involves many aspects, not only the quality or enjoyment they have generated. As professional comic artist I can not ignore the influence of certain authors or the fact that I pay special attention to the American industrie because is the market for which I work. There are things on my list of 2010 or even earlier, because much of my readings are comics published in Spain in 2011. Also some, have not yet been published in Spain because I read the american edition. I tried also to avoid the reissues, so common in today's spanish market, but I have to emphasize that much of the things I enjoyed were precisely reissues.

1. Amazing Spiderman #655-656. Dan Slott & Marcos Martin
2. Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Mike Mignola & Richard Corben
3. Scalped Vol 8: You Gotta Sin to Get Saved. Jason Aaron & R. M. Guera
4. Locke & Key vol. 3: Crown of Shadows. Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez
5. Secret Avengers #18. Warren Ellis & David Aja
6. Le Petit Christian. Blutch
7. Fagocitosis. Marcos Prior & Danide
8. Penny Century. Jaime Hernández
9. Wonder Woman #1-4. Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chiang
10. Billy Bat. Naoki Urasawa

Other great readings in the las year have been... Wolverine Debt of Death (Laphan & Aja), Polina (Bastian Vives), Body world (Dash Shaw), BRDP: Hell on Earth (Arcudi & Davis), Joe The Barbarian (Morrison & Murphy), Punisher Max: Kingpin (Aaron & Dillon), Walking Dead (Kirkman & Adlard), Sensei No Kaban/Los años Dulces(Taniguchi & Kawakami), Cerebus Churh & State, Hellblazer (Milligan & Camuncoli)...

MERRYFUCKIN'CRHISTMAS!

This year, I wanted to make a Christmas card. Maybe because I'm unemployed and bored. The year began with a very good job prospects, with interesting publishing projects that ended up not being so much, for editorial decisions, at least questionable. Hope that the new year bring me a project that finally make the "comicfuckin'goodbook" I think I can do. At least, on a personal, I can not ask for more... 2011 brought the best gift: my son Saúl.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2012!!!

Felices fiestas y feliz 2012!!!

Spiderman & New York

All began with a photo I took in NY during my trip to the NYCC. I liked too much the picture and I wanted to do something with it but i wasn't sure about what. At the end I just started drawing it as if it were any comic panel background, reducing it to pure black and white, textured with dry brush, then I added screentones silhouetting the buildings trying to create an aerial perspective effect. I filled all the background with a neutral warm gray and I began to draw lights directly in Photoshop with the 3D brush tool.

When I finished I realized that something was missing. Maybe it's because I went to NY to a convention of comic; but I found it obvious that what was missing in that NY skyline was the Spiderman elusive silhouette leaping between buildings...

“The reason I had a little altercation with them is because they editted some of my work. They changed certain things that I did’nt feel it should be changed. And I insisted that we could’nt continue on that basis. Each job delivering insisted be left exactly as it was.
(...)
We had disagreements about the way I told stories. I simply insisted that they go in my way, or they woul’nt go in at all. I mean, I don’t have to draw comics to make a living. I can do other things. So I do not need the aggravation. If you are a publisher and you want my work, you get in my way or you don’t get it at all. It's as simple as that.” Jim Steranko interview for Fantastic Fanzine #11 (1970)

¡Jodo! ¡los tenía cuadrados el amigo Steranko!

Wow! Steranko had got balls!

The fact is that the other day, a friend told me on one that was friend of a friend of a friend, who is working on an American publisher of those superhero stuff, what it happened to him that he just finished to draw a miniseries and when he saw the printed issue, He saw that they had changed things. I used to think that this no longer happened without the consent of the authors. It's seems not to...

It seems that in the penultimate number, the story was originally developed in parallel with a flashback of the origin of a character, and was jumping from one scene to another to finally converge in the present moment in an epic rebirth of the character. Well, the publisher decided to retrospectively reedit the issue, gathering the scenes linearly, telling first the flashback and then the present "rebirth"; with which obviously the story lost all rhythm, epic and any narrative sense.

But, that what happened in the last number was even worse. They decided to change the end (for a "happy end"), after all the issue was already drawn, inked and colored... But how they shouldn’t want to pay a dollar more to make new pages, they took the last 6 pages, did a little cut and paste, rewrote the dialogues, moved a panel here, cut a shot there, expanded a face and cloned in other place, retouched a expression to fit with the new dialogue, eliminated a page no longer make any sense... and go.Result: it didn’t understand a shit. All this of course, without even informing the author that he knew when he bought the TPB in a store, because no one had balls to send copies...

With all this I ask myself: "What would say Steranko...?" The truth is something I can imagine ... but, better I shut up.
